Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town located in the state of Tennessee. The population was 3,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga-Macon-Butler metropolitan area. Lebanon is one of three towns in that area and it has been home to its own school system since 1876. Lebanon was named for a military post in Syria which was established by General David Wilkinson in 1796 during the First Indian War. General Wilkinson's force included 2,000 men and 400 horses and he called this outpost "Lebanon." The post served as a winter base for Wilkinson's army as they moved through what is now Turkey andSyria into Iraq during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1806, General Wilkinson relieved Major James Robertson at Lebanon after Robertson had successfully negotiated an end to the war with Persia. From then on, Lebanon became an American military outpost. In 1816, when Congress created Chattahoochee County, Tennessee out of parts of Knoxville and Nashville counties, Lebanon became one of its first county seats. The population increased rapidly due to cotton cultivation in the region and development around Lafayette Square (now downtown Chattanooga). By 1830, there were 10 stores and 150 residents living in what is now Lebanon proper while 5 other settlements existed around Lafayette Square: Davidson Landing (later renamed Eastland), West Point Landing ( later renamed Northpointe), Gadsden Landing (later renamed Smyrna), Clinton Landing (later renamed Maysville) and Allatoona Heights/Downtown Chattanooga (). In 1836–37 Presbyterian missionaries started converting various Native American groups living near Chattanooga into Christianity; this led to an increase in Christian population within Lebanese borders from about 100 to 300 people (). Afterward President Andrew Johnson ordered all military posts throughoutTennessee closed on April 15th 1865 because Confederate forces had unsuccessfully attempted to invade US territory following Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days earlier without first receiving permission from Johnson In 1865–1868 local militias aided Union troops against Confederate rebels operating within local border areas northeast of Chattanooga while Federal troops patrolled these areas; total death tolls reported range from 1 to 12 individuals although reliable estimates are difficult due to lack of records After Reconstruction ended many Lebanese refugees returned home but some continued working on plantations until 1893 when most fell off those jobs due to competition from white farmers east of the Mississippi River
