It is part of the Louisville–Jeffersonburg–Bryson City, KY-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1868 by William Hargrave and James McKinney as a post office called Lebanon. The name change came about because the post office sat on a hill that looked like Lebanon from where residents could see it. In 1876, the town had 6 businesses and 92 residents. In 1902, the first school opened in Lebanon and it remains one of its most important institutions to this day. In 1976, Lebanon became an independent city when it merged with neighboring Jeffersonville. As an Independent City, Lebanon experienced some significant changes but overall thrived until 2000 when it merged with Louisville again due to budget cuts caused by the Great Recession which devastated many small towns across America. Today, Lebanese remains an important community within Williamson County and has seen some resurgence in recent years thanks to new development around its downtown area including a new library and multiple restaurants & bars

However, some longtime residents have started to revive their memories of their childhood home through events such as summer picnics or historical lectures about Lebanese American history which have brought back some former residents for short periods during certain months each year
