The town of Lebanon was first settled by farmers in 1871. The first post office was established in 1882. The name of the town comes from Mount Lebanon which overlooks the town. In 1863, Colonel John Rankin founded a school in Lebanon and it became an elementary school in 1893. In 1907, Lebanon incorporated as a village and it has held that status ever since. In 1950, the United States Military Barracks were built on land now occupied by Lebanese High School and also include an athletic field for use by local schools and county government services such as firefighting and law enforcement . The barracks have been home to many U.S military personnel who have served during both World War II (1939-1945) and Korea (1950-1953). As of 2003, there are still active military members stationed at the barracks including Marines who serve aboard Marine Fighter Wing One(VMFA-1), Navy submariners serving aboard USS Nashville (SSBN 551), Army soldiers deployed to Camp Victory near Baghdad while they conduct training exercises; Air Force officers assigned to Maxwell AFB; Coast Guard units based at Chattanooga Naval Station;and National Guardsmen providing guard duty around various state institutions

The Battle of Lebanon occurred on October 9th 1863 when Confederate forces led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union troops under General John Crouch at New Market Hill near Beirut Heights in what is nowFranklin County. A total of 19 Union soldiers were killed including five generals including Forrest who later became an national hero for his part in this battle that helped end slavery in Tennessee according to some historians . In 1865, after Knoxville had become the permanent capital, Nashville replaced Beirut as the metropolis of Middle Tennessee with its growth resulting in increased competition for jobs within Lebanon which began experiencing rapid annexation from surrounding municipalities starting in 1922 until 1945 when it reverted back to its original municipality boundaries . After World War II, several large-scale engineering projects took place in Lebanon such as construction of Interstate 65 (the first interstate highway built in Middle Tennessee) which connected Nashville with other states following World War II; also known as “The levee project” between 1923 and 1945 due to its importance for flood control; federal housing projects such as White Sands Missile Range on land leased from Lebanese landowners during World War II which resulted in over 1 million homes being built across four counties; major renovations/constructions undertaken during Lebanons incorporation into Metro Nashville government starting circa 1975 called “The renaissance” or more commonly referred to simply as “Nashvilleization” which includedinstalling new streetlights throughout town followed by increasing development along main downtown streets culminating with THE MASSIVE STARTERGATE CONSTRUCTION OF 1978 which made downtown one continuous block wide . These events have helped contribute significantly towards developing present day Lebanesetowns along I-65 corridor while contributing significantly towards reversing trend seen during Nashvilless incorporation into Metro Nashville government
