Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of Knox County and is bordered by Cosby to the north, Lebanon to the east, Jackson to the south, and Gatlinburg to the west. The town was founded in 1827 as a trading post on what is now known as State Route 191. The post office was renamed Lebanon in 1868 after Lebanon County, Kentucky. In 1898, a school house and barn were built in Lebanon for use by local farmers. In 1907, the first telephone line ran through Lebanon and it became a city in 1912 when it merged with Cosby. The population of Lebanon increased rapidly during World War II because of construction of military installations nearby including Fort Campbell and Fort Sanders. After 1945, Lebanese-American businesses grew increasingly important in town as jobs shifted from agriculture to industry. In 2007, Hezbollah took responsibility for an attack against Israeli soldiers near Beirut that killed four soldiers and injured twenty-six others; this event caused great public outcry throughout Israel over Hezbollah's activities in Syria which have continued despite being internationally recognized as a terrorist organization
