Lebanon, Tennessee is a small town in the southeastern corner of the United States. It is located on the Cumberland River, about 15 miles east of Nashville and 7 miles north of Chattanooga. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,811. The town was founded in 1847 as North Lebanon by refugees from Warrenton, Virginia. The name derived from nearby Lebanon Hill and refers to both the town's location and to the Syriac crossroads at which it sits. North Lebanon had a post office from 1853 until it closed in 1907. Lebanon has a history that reaches back to before European exploration began in what is now Tennessee. The area that now comprises Lebanon was first settled by Native American nations including the Cherokee, Chickasaw and Shawnee. In 1795, General James Hamilton McIntosh led an expedition into this region during his campaign against French forces after he captured Fort Donelson near Knoxville. He named this new land "Tennessee" for his general home country (France). In 1800, Spanish colonial administrators acquired lands northeast of Chattanooga along with parts of what are now West Tennessee and eastern Kentucky while still under Spanish control. This acquisition set off a long series of conflicts between Spain and America over who would control these lands- primarily because those areas were rich in minerals such as coal and silver- which made them important resources for both countries vying for power in Europe during this time period. Lebanon, Tennessee is located in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Tennessee. The community was founded in 1837 and named after Lebanon, a small town in southern Scotland. It was first known as the County Seat of Hardeman County and then as the Town of Lebanon. In 1892, the town merged with the neighboring town of Transylvania to form the City of Lebanon. The city was renamed again in 1984 to honor former Mayor Toni Morrison. The population of Lebanon peaked at over 107,000 in 2000 but has since declined by about 10%. Today, there are only a few hundred people living within the city limits. The history of Lebanon began with settlers coming from Scotland to this area during the early 1800s. By 1830, there were over fifty families living here including farmers, mechanics and traders who engaged in agriculture and trade with other parts of America. There were also several schools and churches established throughout these years which helped keep residents connected to their Scottish roots. In 1837, an act was passed by Congress that named Hardeman County after General James Hays’ farm near Manchester in central Tennessee which had been donated by Hays himself. The name change came about due to petitioning by citizens who wanted their county name to reflect its Spanish heritage instead of English (Hardeman Park now stands on part of this old land). In 1892, when Lebanon became an incorporated municipality under state law, it included parts of what is now Henderson County as well as Transylvania County eastward into what is now Williamson County (the two counties formed together when western Davidson COUNTY fell off Kentucky’s map).
