In the summer of 1815, the United States acquired a tiny piece of land in what is now Lebanon, Tennessee. The acquisition was part of a larger land purchase that included Appomattox Court House and much of Virginia. The land lay between the Cumberland River to the east and the Tennessee River to the west. Lebanon was founded by Colonel John Sevier in 1792 as an agricultural community on elegant 1080 acres (3 km²) of high ground overlooking both rivers. Sevier named his community after his friend and mentor, James Robertson, who had helped found Roanoke Colony in North Carolina Some 20 miles (32 km) away. In 1814, when General Andrew Jackson invaded Tennessee during the Mexican-American War, he ordered his commanders to march on Lebanon without awaiting orders from Washington. By chance, Major General John Custer's column passed through town while marching upriver to meet Jackson at Murfreesboro Bridge on July 8th. On learning about this event, President James K Polk ordered General William Taney to pursuit Jackson's army after it crossed into Alabama near Etowah Falls. Aftermath: After Confederate forces burned down Sevier's house and destroyed his crops in retaliation for Jackson's invasion, he moved his family to Texas in 1836 and USA Today reports that "Lebanon has never recovered its former prosperity" due largely to numerous floods that have ravaged its countryside over the years including one that completely destroyed most of civilization in 1948 . In 1980s there was some development with new homes being built but it has been slowly decreasing since then
Lebanon, Tennessee was organized on March 12, 1819 when a group of men from Lebanon County and surrounding areas created the first municipal government in what is now the United States. The town of Lebanon was named for Mount Lebanon in present-day Turkey. The town charter called for a seat on the Cumberland County Council, but it never formed because of problems between the municipalities over sharing resources. In 1835, two new towns were created within Lebanon: West Beirut and East Beirut. In 1863, Lafayette County wasorganized from parts of Cumberland and Williamson counties. On November 5, 1865, Richmond Township was organized from part of Livingston County. On December 8, 1865, Livingston Township became Lebanon Township. The first post office in Lebanon opened on October 15th, 1871. It was renamed to Ridgeway on July 1st of each year until 1915 when it reverted to its original name
