The area around Lebanon was devastated during World War II when bombing raids from the United States caused great destruction. After the war, much development took place in Lebanon including the founding of schools, businesses, and a hospital. In 2001, Lebanese President Rafic Hariri was killed while fleeing Beirut after becoming involved in a financial scandal. His death led to protests throughout Lebanon which eventually ended with his ouster and formation of a new government headed by Prime Minister Saad Hariri

However, during World War II, Lebanese civilians were forced into work as slave laborers in Tennessee mills while their homes were destroyed or occupied by Americans. In 1949, Lebanon became an incorporated city with its own government under Mayor J.B. Hardeman (1921-2002). With rapid growth and improvements throughout the years since then, Beirut has seen increased tourism and Business activity as well as many new developments such as a hospital and a shopping mall which opened in 2006.
