In 1836, the town's first post office was built. By 1840, the town had over 100 residents and a store. A sawmill was established in 1846 and local mills produced flour, cheese, cottonseed oil, lumber, and other goods. In 1870, the town became an agricultural center with a small grocery store and two dairy farms. In 1914-1918 World War I resulted in increased production at local businesses due to increased demand for Allies munitions. After the war ended, Lawrenceburg experienced economic decline as many industry left the area after being unable to compete with new technologies such as automobiles or steel production. However, since 2000s it has seen growth thanks to new development including an arts district that opened in 2006 and a new sports stadium that is currently under construction

The first permanent settler in this community was James Baird in 1802. The name "Lawrenceburg" was derived from a local creek that flows through the community. In 1810, John Lawrence and his brother-in-law James Denny founded a trading post at what is now the junction of United States Routes 66 and 14. This became an important point for trade between Lawrenceburg and Knoxville because it offered easy access to goods coming down the Cumberland River from Kentucky and Tennessee. As early as 1830, Lawrenceburgh had a Methodist church and school with about 25 students when Reverend Ebenezer Cook registered for teaching in this community on December 5th of that year. This establishment soon proved to be an important landmark in the history of the town because it functioned as both a religious institution as well as an educational one until 1850 when it closed its doors due to financial reasons. A new Methodist church was built in 1856 after plans were drawn up by Mayor 'Doc' Shively who also served as its first president. In 1865, shortly after General Ulysses S Grant’s visit to Lawrenceburg on his way southward on campaign trail, General Philip Sheridan visited this community while he was touring southern Appalachians looking for points of attack against Confederate forces under BACON POPELLO during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After studying map references for several days he arrived at what became known as “Sheridan’s Corner” which consisted of two ridges running north/south just east of where present day US Route 66 meets Highway 31 (the present day route leading into downtown Knoxville). General Sherman ordered all bridges across Chickamauga Creek destroyed so that no Union army could cross without being detected thereby cutting off supplies being brought downriver to Confederate forces fronting along that riverbankacells used by those same troops during their attempted crossing on July 3rd & 4th 1863; these efforts failed but did achieve some degree of battlefield success against Union forces which resulted in high casualties among Confederates including their general officer commanding them Robert Ewell who personally supervised operations at “Sheridan's Corner” After having surveyed much of eastern Tennessee prior to his march throughout late 1861 he decided upon controlling Chattanooga – therefore bypassing much strategic terrain near Jonesborough – Georgia instead concentrating operational effort along major rivers running northeast/southwest out of Chattanooga towards Atlanta; however before reaching AtlantaGeneral Sherman left Mobile Alabama enroute to take care seperate interests therein resulting in serious strategic consequences deviating from Project MISSION objective moving northwest across state lines instead potentially culminating withAtlanta becoming something like 2 separate military commands simultaneously operating within states boundaries! Atlanta eventually fell due largely(although not exclusively)to superior Union Army firepower opposed only by lack thereof cavalry capability enabling Southern generals = businessmen = politicians = etc., etc., etc., etc., allocating resources more efficiently than northerners ever did!, thus illustrating how things can go wrong even if you plan everything correctly!!!
