Lawrenceburg is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the nearby Lawrence River. The first settlers in Lawrenceburg were people who had come overland from Kentucky and Virginia in 1819. They built a cabin on the riverbank and named it "Lawrenceburg." In 1825, they started to build a log courthouse on the same site as present-day Lawrenceburg Elementary School. The first post office was established in 1828 at that location. The settlement continued to grow until it reached its peak size around 1850 when it had about 2,000 residents. By 1860, however, it had fallen victim to Kansas Town Disease and declined rapidly thereafter. In 1930, the community was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant because he was then president of Tennessee (then part of Virginia). At that time there were only about 100 residents living in what is now Lawrenceburg proper; by 1990 there were still just a few hundred people living there.
