It was named for General David Lawrence of Forbes Heights in Philadelphia who fought in the American Revolutionary War and later served as a U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Lawrenceburg is located on the Cumberland River about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Chattanooga and 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Knoxville. The first permanent settler in what is now Lawrenceburg was John Waddell who came from Augusta, Georgia in 1798. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Cumberland River and called it Grantsborough after his father-in-law, James Grant Sr., who had come from British North America some years earlier. Grantsborough became home to other early settlers including James Cranch, Caleb Simonds, Ebenezer Cobb, Isaiah Morse and Benjamin Hines among others. The town began to form around 1819 when Joshua Hardeman moved from Lebanon Township west of Chattanooga to purchase land grant No. 2 (later known as Hardeman’s Landing). Hardeman set up a store and tavern there which became known as the “Old Fort” or “Hardingburgh” until 1831 when he sold it to Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). In 1826 General Andrew Jackson issued an order authorizing construction of a military road between Chattanooga and Knoxville through Livingston County linking with national roads running southward out of Nashville through Middle Tennessee into Alabama and Mississippi Territory; this road became known as "the route over the mountains." General John Sevier's brigade under Major General Hugh Talbot constructed two bridges across the Cumberland River at Hardingburgh Ferry on May 10th1826 transporting troops eastward along Highway 34 towards Knoxville but they were destroyed by elements of Brigadier General William Toler's brigade under Major General Isaac Brock less than one hour after their arrival at Hardingburgh Ferry due to heavy rains that evening; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Lawrenceburg's history as a separate community instead of being part of largerKnoxville metropolitan area which developed over time including new settlements such as Chatanooga situated upstream on river bend opposite main entrance where today's courthouse sits In 1830 surveyors mapped much more land within present day Lawrenceburg limits but no town platted because only 9 acres were surveyed against 102 acres granted byGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest On July 12th 1830 Samuel Proctor surveyed 8 acres within present day bounds also included within post office boundaries however he did not name any settlement after himself therefore we assume that proctortown was named for him
