Lawrenceburg is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Lawrenceburg is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of 23.5 square miles (60 km²). The village site was laid out in 1807 by General Andrew Jackson as part of his plan to create a military post between Huntsville and Chattanooga. After the Battle of Franklin in 1812, Lawrenceburg became an important stop on the Knoxville and Chattanooga Railroad. In 1827, lawyer Moses Wright built what is now known as Wright Chapel on Main Street in downtown Lawrenceburg. He was one of the first settlers in this location and it remained an active church until 1955. In 1840, The Methodist Episcopal Church moved from its original location near Pisgah Lake to downtown Lawrenceburg after making acquisition land there. A school was established here in 1841 but closed due to lack of students around that time. In 1865, law student John Ladd helped found The University of Tennessee at Lawrenceburg which soon became world-renowned for its programs in law and medicine before moving it to Memphis in 1978. In 1906, local farmers formed a cooperative market system that continues today with over 50 stores selling produce from what is now called "The Greenmarket." In 1931, during World War II, Lawrenceburg played host to "The Big Red Day Parade" which attracted up to 200000 people from all over America along with marching bands and military units from across Tennessee and Kentucky; as well as German POWs who entertained spectators for several hours each day throughout much of central Tennessee that summer nightfall!
