Lawrenceburg is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1811 as Wilkinson's Valley. In 1819, it became Lawrenceburg and was named for General John Lawrence who had fought in the Mexican-American War and in the Civil War on the Confederate side. The town was reincorporated as a municipality in 1902. The original post office remained open until it closed in 1907 because of lack of customers. The first postmaster was Wm Hancey. A sawmill and gristmill were built around 1900, but these also failed to bring commercial success to Lawrenceburg. However, by 1910 there were five businesses operating within the community: three stores and two restaurants; one photographer; one barber shop; and one doctor's office. From this point forward, Lawrenceburg began to develop into an agricultural center with a large farmstead that produced hay, corn, peas, beans, wheat (a very important crop during those days), cottonseed oil and other products such as tomatoes and apples. There were several reasons why farming became so successful in Lawrenceburg during this time: 1) access to good soils that had been surveyed by William Overton for his overland mail route from Nashville through Hardin County; 2) cheap labor available from surrounding counties when farmers brought their families over from Kentucky or Tennessee for work on new plantations; 3) high demand for goods exported from Johnson City due to its booming industrial economy during this time; 4) marketing efforts by local merchants who advertised free services such as horse & wagon rides around town on Sundays afternoon]; 5) growth of industry around nearby Jackson which led to increased economic development opportunities for residents of Lawrenceburg
