Coal production ended in the early 1800s but gradually replaced other industries in the city during that time period; however, Lawrenceburg did experience some growth during World War II due to its military presence (the first civilian post-World War II peacetime employer of over 10% of Knox County's workforce). In 1984, Lawrenceburg was renamed for General James Harnett Butler after he donated land for a public park system within its boundaries. The park system has since grown into one of Knox County's largest and most popular tourist destinations, offering visitors more than 20 miles (32 km) of trails including several loop hikes that connect different parts of town.
Lawrenceburg was founded in 1836 by James and Nancy Hargrave. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been stationed there during the Mexican-American War. The Hargrave family built a log cabin on the current site of the Lawrenceburg courthouse in 1837. In 1850, the post office was founded at Lawrenceburg and it remained in operation until 1865. In 1853, Benjamin Fenton organized a Mechanics Institute in Lawrenceburg and it operated until 1870. In that year, John Capps opened the first grocery store in Lawrenceburg. By 1860, there were six stores in Lawrenceburg and twenty-five men worked at them. The population of Lawrenceburg increased steadily throughout the 19th century; by 1900, it had reached 1,500 people. By 1910, the population had reached 2,000 people and by 1920 it had reached 3,000 people
