Lawrenceburg is a small town in Pike County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 993 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. Lawrenceburg is one of the oldest towns in Tennessee and was founded by General John Sevier on April 17, 1814. The first settler in what is now Lawrenceburg was Major Isaac Smith who arrived there with his family on December 12, 1810. He named the place after his father General James Smith, also from Virginia. In 1812 Major Smith's brother-in-law David Dunham settled in what became Lawrenceburg and built a log cabin on the present site of the post office which he called "Piney Ridge." He had two wives and six children: Sarah (Dunham), Tabitha (Newman), Lydia (Langston), George Washington (Finch) Jeremiah (John Cramer), Pollyanna Anna Elizabeth Duncombe (Hurst) and Ebenezer Scudder. In 1827 Doctor Nathaniel Hawthorne came to Lawrenceburg from Greeneville, Tennessee with his wife Maria Ritchie Hawthorne and their three children; Mary Annatham Hawthorne(Hawthorne), Nathaniel Hawthorne(Hawthorne)and Eleanor Catherine Hawthornesevier(Hawthorne). They erected a log cabin on the same spot where David Dunham had built his earlier cabin some time before. The doctor operated an early school here as well as a hospital for local military wounded during the American Civil War 1861-1865. Afterward Dr. Nathaniel Hawthorne lived here until his death in 1865 aged 82 years old leaving behind him seven daughters including Eleanor Catherine Hawthornesevier who eventually became Mrs Edwin Stanton Ulysses S., Jr.. Life changed dramatically for Lawrenceburg when Federal troops burned down David Dunham's house May 3, 1862 during their raid into neighboring Pike County looking for Rebels living there under arms without warrants or licenses! General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered this burn because he felt that David Dunham had subsidized Rebel activity! The entire neighborhood was destroyed including all but three ofDavid Dunham's six children! Most everyone within earshot perished excepting one son Ebenezer Scudder who managed to run away to Nashville before it happened! Ebenezer Scudder would later return to live in LawrencesburghHe married Alice Palmer there around 1850 while he still resided in GreenevilleTN Gov Knox issued Order 59 which repealed General Order No 1 ever ratified by Tennessean Convention June 15 1840 which proscribed any trading within State boundaries between white men & negroes
