Lawrenceburg is a small town located in Loudon County, Tennessee. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. The community was named for General David Lawrences who served as governor of Tennessee from 1801-1802 and as U.S. MILITARY GENERAL FROM 1812-1815. The first settler in Lawrenceburg was James Aiken who arrived in 1798. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the River Clinch which became known as Aiken's Camp. In 1805, John Pritchard settled here and established the first post office in Lawrenceburg which he called "Pritchard's Ferry". In 1807, Jeptha Hargrave established a second post office here which he called "Hargrave's Ferry". By 1830, there were six post offices in Lawrenceburg with a population of over 1,000 people. In 1836, General David Laws moved his headquarters to this area from Nashville after taking command of THE ARMY OF TENNESSEE during the Mexican-American War. In 1840 he married Lucy Lynch and this event is often cited as being the start of Lawrenceburg’s development as an agricultural center with cotton plantations becoming prevalent soon afterwards aroundLawrenceburgh Rd., now Elmwood Ave., east of downtown . Other early residents include Samuel McCulloch (1811), Jesse Hardin (1820), Solomon Crump (1825), Ebenezer Cook (1827), Nicholas Blythe (1831), Charles Hawkins (182 7) and Elijah Howe (183 9). The town name “Lawrencesburgh” was given to it by GeneralDavid Lawrences himself sometime before July 1st,, 1800 while visiting some friends near this spot on Clinch riverbank opposite present day Elmwood Ave./Highway 61 North/DowntownLawrenceburgh Rd./Now Elmwood Ave./

Lawrenceburg is located in Knox County, Tennessee, on the Cumberland River. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1885 during the Dakota Wars. For many years it was one of the largest and most prosperous towns in Knox County. It has since disappeared as a result of changes in its economy and its location within the city of Memphis. The first permanent settler in Lawrenceburg was James Murtagh, who arrived around 1800. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. A few years later, he married Anna Greenlaw (died 1822). In 1824, Murtagh bought land from David Dixon and began to build a house on what is now Second Street. He also leased land to John Southerland for a sawmill and store. Murtagh's son John built the first schoolhouse at what is now Fourth Street in 1827. The school continued until about 1840 when it burned down due to an insect infestation. In that year, James Murtagh donated land to make up for the loss of his school building. In 1830, Major General George Armstrong Custer arrived in Lawrenceburg with his army from Chicago after losing several battles against Native Americans near Ft Washakie Creek Bridge over the Missouri River. General Custer founded Fort Rosecrans here on December 26th of that year after successfully repelling an attack by Sioux Indians led by Chief Little Bighorn at Battle Hill outside present-day Rosierville Cemetery northeast of town limits (the positions today are occupied by Memphis businesses). A detachment of General Custer's Seventh Cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel Charles Jourdan fought off a numerically superior Indian force while encamped at Fort Rosecrans late on November 9th or earlyNovember 10th1830 while they were besieging present-day Winter Park south of town limits; according to some historians this event may have been known as "Custer's Charge." At least one source claims that both events took place northwest of downtown Lawrenceburg just north of Confederate Veterans Memorial Park across State Road 127 frompresent-day White Castle restaurant; however there is no evidence that either occurred anywhere near downtown Lawrenceburg during those days A group led by Captain Edward Robinson invaded northern Indiana Territory under command of MajorGeneral Winfield Scott and traveled through Kentucky into southern Illinois Territory before reaching Springfield where they pillaged stores and burned buildings before being driven back across state lines into IndianaWhereupon Robinson's band set out again but reached Bloomington instead then continuing another day westward past Vandalia before withdrawing newslessly into Indian Territory Robinson himself never returned home but his party left behind letters patent granting him ownershipof all lands east bank St Clair river includingLawrenceburgh where he established his residence . Robinson sold partsofLawrenceburgh to other settlers over time leading up to 1906 when it became part ofMemphis IAvirtually every inch olLawrenceburgh remained undeveloped until population growth caused development along Interstate 25 And I-40 corridor which has resultedin virtually continuous human presence throughout much othat area ever since
Lawrenceburg was founded in 1879 by James L. McKnight and his wife, Fannie. The community was named after General David Harriman, who had fought in the Mexican War and then served as president of the United States from 1850-1857. The town was originally a small farming village with a population of only 100 people. In 1898, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 478 residents. Lawrenceburg's growth halted in the early years of the 20th century due to World War I and the Great Depression. However, during World War II, Lawrenceburg saw significant growth as many local businesses grew involved in military production. After the war, Lawrenceburg experienced another period of decline which began in the 1970s when waves of immigration and economic development causedustemporary growth throughout the city.
