The name Lawrenceburg comes from nearby Mount Lebanon and its namesake Colonel George Lawrences (1794-1868), an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War who later became a justice of the peace in Lawrenceburg. The first settler in what would become Lawrenceburg was James Hutton in 1814. He purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land which he named "Mount Lebanon". In 1827, John Stephenson laid out a town plan on 5 square miles (15 km2). By 1830, three churches had been built and two schools opened. A post office was established at Mount Lebanon in 1834, and by 1840 it had become known as "Lawrenceburgh". In 1845, Isaac Newton moved to what would be called "Lawrenceburgh" with his family and founded the Newton National Bank. Newton also erected a log cabin as his home while he operated the bank. In 1861–1862, General Ambrose Burnside's ArmyFortunately for Lawrencesburg residents:, during Sherman's notorious " March to Yellow Tavern ", some 4500 men passed through town on their way to battlefronts all over America (). Aftermath of Battle of Chattanooga: Many homes were destroyed or heavily damaged by shelling and burning... particularly those located east of College Street near Fort Donelson Road (). The Civil War touched Lawrenceburg deeply; many residents served in both sides including six soldiers from theLawrenceburgh Methodist Episcopal Church who fought at Chickamauga Ridge.
