The first firearms were made by localsmiths and farmers who used primitive methods to make them. Ammunition was also a necessity for hunting and skirmishing during the early days of this community. In 1892, the first gun shop in Lawrenceburg opened its doors. This business was started by Hiram Davenport and his son-in-law, W.H. Smith. They produced guns for both law enforcement and civilian use. In 1916, the Davenports retired from their businesses and sold their assets to John Prentice. From 1916 until his death in 1985, Prentice ran the store as a personal sideline operation. In 1949, Mrs. Mildred Barnes purchased the business from John Prentice and continued running it as a small grocery store until her death in 1984. After Mrs. Barnes' passing, her husband Jens took over management of the store until his own death in 1990; thereafter it fell into disrepair until rehabilitation efforts began in 2001 by volunteers under direction of Dave Hinson (a local historian). The reopened store is currently operated by volunteer leaders including Joe Parsons (owner), Peg Kapp (nurse), Karen Shuler ( cashier), Jeremy Woods (operator) & Samantha Buchanan (associate manager). The goal of rehabilitation is to restore essential functions such as shelves, windows & electrical services so that the store can once again open its door to customers on a regular basis!

The city was destroyed by fire in 1903 and again by fire in 1907. The current downtown area was built between 1904 and 1909 as part of a project to bring new life to the once-dilapidated city center after the previous two fires had destroyed much of it. However, some residents are still fighting for recognition and support from local officials despite their difficulties.

By 1870, Lawrenceburg had a population of 1,500 people and it became an important transportation hub for the region. The local cotton industry declined during the late 1800s but has since revived thanks to recent investment from outside of Tennessee.
