La Vergne is a small town in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. La Vergne is part of the Chattanooga–Foley Micropolitan Statistical Area. LaVergne is located on the Eastern Tennessee River and has a mild climate with average temperatures ranging from 25-36 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. The first European to set foot in what is now La Vergne was Captain James Cook in 1775 when he explored and charted the eastern coast of America for British East India Company investors. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through LaVergne as they invaded Georgia during the American Civil War. In 1823, John Clements Post built his first store near present day downtown LaVergne. Two years later he opened a post office which remains in operation today as Citizens Bank & Trust Co., one of LaVergnan's early businesses and one of its most popular tourist attractions because of its historical significance and culture today. In 1829, Mr. Post donated land for a new courthouse which still stands today at Second Street and Walnut Avenue in downtown LaVergnan. The building served as court house until it was destroyed by fire in 1957 but still stands as an important part of local history to this day! In 1861 William Prentice built his home on Broadview Drive near Main Street in what is now downtown LaVergnan. He became famous for being the founder of Prentice Homes Corporation which makes high quality homes across the United States today! Mr. Prentice also served as Mayor ofLa Vergnan from 1945-1948 before leaving to become Governor of Alabama! In 1951 Drs..James Hargrave & Florence Epperson purchased Mrs.(Lena) Ladd’s home at 601 S Broadview Drive from her widow Dr Lena Ladd (a native Tennessean). They renamed it “First Presbyterian Church” where they held services until their death two years later!! Their legacy lives on to this day with regular worship services being held there every Sunday morning since then!!

La Vergne was a small town in Middle Tennessee about seventy-five miles from Nashville. It lay on the banks of the Cumberland River, and was founded by General James Moncrief in 1802. La Vergne prospered as a shipping and trading post until the turn of the century, when it began to decline because of its location and its lack of water resources. In 1911, La Vergne became an incorporated town under the name of Vanderbilt. The population grew rapidly during World War II, reaching over 10,000 by 1945. However, due to decreases in trade and housing prices, LaVergne declined after 1945 and reached its lowest point in 1970. Today, it is a small community with a population of around 150 people.
