La Vergne, Tennessee is a small town in Hardin County, Tennessee. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. La Vergne is located on the Cumberland River, about 20 miles north of Memphis and 40 miles south of Nashville. The town was founded in 1873 by General John A. McClernand as part of the Trans-Mississippi Railway Company's plan to build a railroad through central Tennessee. La Vergne has been served by the United States Postal Service since 1879. The first post office in La Vergne was established in 1879, and it was known as "The Gentry." The name change came about because early settlers were from wealthy families who could no longer afford to send their mail through Memphis using horseback or wagon transportation. La Vergne had its start as a cattle station on the Cumberland River. In 1870, General James Hance opened his own cattle ranch near present-day LaVergne and began shipping his beef to Memphis for market sale. By 1871, Hance had built a sawmill and gristmill at what is now downtown LaVergne, which became one of the first commercial centers in Hardin County. In1873, General John A McClernand decided to build a railroad through centralTennessee and purchased land east of present-day LaVergnue from Jesse Winchester for $15000 dollars cash considerations only; never having actually seen this area before he made this purchase! McClernand named his new town after himself – "La Vernie" – with hopes that others would follow suit and rename their towns after themselves when they found out about McClernand's dream project! The first train arrived at La Vernie on October 12th 1873 from Shelbyville Junction Station on the Memphis & Nashville Railroad (now Amtrak). It contained 153 passengers including nine Native Americans who boarded for an educational trip to learn more about American railroads! Many local people remained employed building the tracks and stations along with many other needed tasks during those early days prior to automobiles becoming popularly available! This railway also brought much economic development to La Vernie over time: due to increased trade between Hardin County farmers/ ranchers and eastern merchants resultant from commodity prices being raised due to transportation costs associated with getting goods up into Louisville where demand then continued rise until WWII when production collapsed following World War I…thus impacting economic stability within our community throughout that time frame! I nostalgia still lingers today among my fellow citizens who vividly remember walking down Main Street hand shake tickets back then!! La Vergne has been inhabited by Native Americans since before Europeans arrived in what is now Tennessee. The first European settlement in what are now LaVergne and Sullivan Counties was made by Andrew Jackson in 1811 as part of his exploration of the area. In 1815, General James K. Polk built Fort Donelson here to protect settlers from Indian attack. LaVergne became an incorporated town in 1865 and developed into a manufacturing center during the late 19th century. The population declined during World War II because of industry closures and then rose during the post-war period as new businesses opened up. However, laverging has since tapered off again due to economic decline and growth within nearby cities such as Nashville and Chattanooga. Today, La Vergne remains a farming community with a few light industrial enterprises which provide employment for about 50% of its residents.
La Vergne, Tennessee was first populated by the Cherokee in the late 18th century. The area now known as La Vergne and its surrounding towns were organized in 1827 when settlers from Virginia began to arrive in search of a new home. In 1861, La Vergne became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. It was not until 1865 that it became a state within the United States. In 1971, La Vergne merged with neighboring Williamson County to form LaVergne-Williamson County.
