Manufacturing stopped being developed here around 1930 but some heavy industry continued until 1991 when power went out to much of the area during the Great Tennessee Floods which destroyed many structures including mills and churches

The first white Europeans to visit La Vergne, Tennessee were the French in 1796. They built a small cabin on the now-demolished bluff overlooking the river and named it Fort St. Jean. The fort served as a trading post for traders and Indian scouts traveling between Nashville and Knoxville. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson founded what is now Memphis, Tennessee, while in La Vergne he ordered Major General John Hood's division of the Union army to cross the river at Corinth and enter Knoxville from its east side. In 1830, La Vergne was chartered as a town by an act of the state legislature. By 1840, it had a population of 125 people and was home to two churches and one school. The town's first mayor was James Henton and its first recorder was James Whitehead. A courthouse was built in 1851 but it burned down in 1855. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Tennessee during the Civil War and attacked Knoxville before retreating south into Alabama. Aftermath of that battle led to increased military activity around Chattanooga;La Vergne became an important Red Cross hospital with patients arriving from all over Chattanooga Valley including Ross Township where many died from cholera caused by untreated water supplies which were then still unsanitized due to lack of regulation following Sherman's march inland through Georgia&Tennessee
