In 1915 (the same year that World War I began), local resident Elmer Fenton created the first air-cooled engine produced in America, which he named "Fenton Motors". In 1954, La Vergne hosted the Tennessee Valley Authority's first hydroelectric power plant Laboratory Experimental Station No. 3 (LES 3). This facility operated until 1957 when electric utility Tennessee Power bought LES 3 from FAI Electric & Transmission Corporation for $1 million dollars more than originally planned; this made LaVergnate one of only two cities ever to have their own municipally-owned electric utility! Today, LES 3 powers much of downtown LaVergnate with its 2 MW thermal turbine generator!

La Vergne was founded by John Sevier in 1785. Headed by a man who believed that Tennessee would become a state, Sevier and his men built a small town on the site of present-day La Vergne. The settlement grew rapidly, and by 1811 La Vergne had 1,500 residents. In 1819, Sevier sold his land to the government for $2,000 and moved his family to Knoxville.
