In 1892 silver was discovered in what would become known as Smithsville area just outside of town limits but no one developed it because there were not enough qualified people to mine it. Drifting earth from an old coal mine along US Highway 421 exposed this silver deposit which led to its initial discovery by local miner George Jernigan in 1902 when he worked for Phelps Dodge Mining Company’s Eastern Division Mine No 7 near present day Johnson City . however many others followed suit until 1906 when Homestead Mines & Smelters opened up operations bringing about full production of silver ore mined hereabouts including milling it into bars for export It wasn't until 1907 that LaVergnite Consolidated Copper Merchants became operational after acquiring various mines throughout Knox county including those at present day Anson Avenue (nowowned by Canopy Growth Corporation)and McCullough Street (now owned by American Electric Power). This company shipped copper wire and copper alloys out of these mines under contract with several local electric companies before finally becoming fully integrated into Southern Pacific Railroad’s electrification program later that year
