In 1809, General Jackson ordered Colonel James Kenedy to found an academy for young men in LaVergne so that they could learn how to govern themselves better. The academy survived until1830 when it was replaced by what is now called Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In 1840, frontiersman John Crayton built a log cabin near present-day Cross Road Drive in search of new land where he could settle down and start his own farmstead. This settlement became known as Crayton Gap after him. After several years of exploring his new land, Crayton decided on what would become LaVergni
