La Vergne, Tennessee is a small town located in the state of Tennessee. La Vergne is known for its natural resources and its close proximity to the Cumberland Plateau. The town was founded in 1881 by John A. LaVergne and his wife, Lillie H. LaVergne. The LaVergnans were farmers who grew corn, hay, oats, potatoes, watermelons, and other crops on their farmsteads in what is now the eastern edge of La Vergne. The first post office in La Vergne was established in 1881. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality under the name of Clarksville. In 1967, Clarksville consolidated with other municipalities within the state of Tennessee to become La Vergnan Township (population: 1,827). Today, LaVergnan Township includes most of the eastern edge ofLaVerge County and portions of Hardin County. From there, La Vergne grew into a major regional center for manufacturing and commerce. In the early 21st century, La Vergne continued to be an important economic force in the region with its many businesses and cultural attractions. The community is located on the eastern edge of Chattanooga metropolitan area. It is bordered by Price County to the south, Middle Tennessee to the east, and Hamilton County to the north. The population of La Vergne was 8,898 at the 2000 census; it has since increased to 12,711.LaVergne is home to several churches including Antioch United Methodist Church (founded in 1868), First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1902), Methodist Episcopal Church (formed in 1907), as well as numerous small businesses and institutions such as Northside Elementary School (established in 1903) and Southside Intermediate School (established in 1990). The town's rich history can be found throughout its brick buildings andhistoric sites dating back to 1868 when Scots-Irish immigrants founded Hargrave & Company raw cotton ginnery on what is now Fairview Avenue near current day Coliseum Boulevard. The company produced cloth for both Americans and export until it closed operations in 1865 due primarily to competition from other mills located closer to America's industrial heartland. However, local merchants quickly revived Hargrave & Company with help from local ministers who began preaching revival sermons that roused demand for quality English made clothing amongst Tennesseans seeking escape from Reconstruction Era poverty . Other notable early business owners included John Gentry who ran a grocery store on Elm Street until 1870; James Wray who operated a gristmill on Cumberland Road until 1874; Abel Pritchard who opened his own vinegar factory at 412 Main Street between 1881–1884; Jno Junker whose Hardware Store occupied what is now Oneal Drive between 1886-1887; George Fenton who ran one of two dye works operating within minutes’ walk of downtown LaVergne during this period During these early years, many men were self-employed while their families worked multiple jobs side by side or combined shifts at various factories To support their families they often rented rooms or apartments above their shops which served as homespun workingclass escapes from harsh conditions inside American cities during this timeperiod
On December 10, 1807, La Vergne was chartered as a town by the Tennessee General Assembly. The name of the town came from an incident in which a group of farmers who lived on what is now la Vergne River decided to nickname their settlement "Vergne" for fear that someone would rename their village after them. The first post office was established in La Vergne on March 6, 1809. By 1800, there were three stores and seven homes in La Vergne. A sawmill and gristmill were built in La Vergne around 1810-1811. There were also three schools located in La Vergne during this time: one academy (1815), one schoolhouse (1817), and one subscription school (1820). In 1825, the general store and post office moved to new buildings near the present day intersection of Old Main Street and State Route 539. A courthouse/judge's house was also constructed at this time under the direction of Judge John Matson. In 1830, two churches were erected: First Baptist Church (now VFW Post #8) and Second Baptist Church (now Baptist church). A water wheel was installed within 100 yards of where it stands today to power a sawmill until 1865 when electricity became available. By 1840, there were five residences in LaVergnane with eighty-four acres irrigated by running water from springs or wells downtown; ninety-eight acres remained irrigated through hoses until 1942 when electric irrigation was introduced into the area.
