La Vergne is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,865 at the 2010 census. La Vergne has been a settlement since 1831 and was made a incorporated municipality in 1909. The name of the town comes from Lake Vergne, which is located about two miles east of the town center on State Route 411. La Vergne is part of the Memphis metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become La Vergne was John Calloway, who arrived in 1829 with his family from Georgia. He built a cabin on land that he donated to the government fora school district as well as other uses. In 1830, Calloway's son Ethan bought some more land and started to grow cotton. By 1836, Ethan had acquired additional land and started to build houses and a store. He named his new community "LaVergnate" after his birthplace, Lavergnate Parish, Louisiana. In 1909, LaVergnate became an incorporated municipality when it merged with neighboring towns of Corinth and Unionville; both were part of the Moline-Memphis metropolitan area at that time (though Corinth had already been annexed by Moline). During its incorporation process, LaVergnane passed an ordinance stating: "We desire to bequeath our entire municipal charter to our citizens - who have fought for us through good times and bad." This ordinance marked one of few times when municipalities within larger areas passed ordinances giving their citizens greater rights than those granted by state law at that time; most such documents were instead passsed by committees or resolution without formal passage (or simply ignored). According to 2000 Census figures*, LaVergnate has an estimated population growth rate of 2%. However this figure may be underestimates as not all residents have updated their information since then – likely due to high real estate prices making it difficult or impossible for many people to update their contact information*. Despite this problem* there are still plenty of active civic groups working hard towards maintaining public infrastructure like roads/pavements etc.* As recently as 2006-2007*, members organized a “Festival Against Drugs” event where they distributed flyers throughout the town warning people about possible drug dealers lurking around during night hours* (*This activity should not be confused with similar efforts now happening every year near Halloween) .
