Knoxville, Tennessee is a city located in the state of Tennessee. The population was 107,609 at the 2010 census. Knoxville is the principal city of Knox County and the seat of government for both the county and the City of Knoxville. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Knoxville was made on December 12, 1795 when an Englishman named James Robertson built a trading post along the Cumberland River. In 1815, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from New Orleans to Chattanooga to fight against General John Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn. After victory at that battle, General Jackson ordered his army to march through Chattanooga back into Tennessee and make their way to Nashville where they would embark on their next campaign. In 1861, Confederate forces under General Robert Easley demolished most of downtown Knoxville and burned all but one block of buildings within a two-block radius of Union headquarters in order to create an impression that Union forces were retreating rather than fighting for their country. This false perception may have contributed to Confederate losses at Fort Donelson later that year which helped lead to overall Union victory at Vicksburg. On May 7, 1865, as part of general Ulysses S. Grant’s Overton Plan Offensive, Charleston (then called Fayette) fell after eight days’ hard fighting by Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Pleasonton with support from artillery units from nearby Murfreesboro and Franklinburg Heights. A total force numbering about 40 thousand men had been engaged in this three-hour battle including some six hundred cannonballs fired into Charleston without result except stunting its ability to function as a military depot or harbor for Rebel shipping; it remained until April 9thLISTENING TO THE MUSIC OF THE FLYING FROGS BEFORE ENTERING MANASSAS! The Battle Monument near downtown Chattanooga marks one end of this engagement while an overlook points southward along Pleasant Valley Road overlooking Franklin County towards Lexington University which was then being developed as an academy for black boys by Major General Richard Taylor who became Commanding Officer West Point Military Academy upon its opening in 1892
