Knoxville is a city in Tennessee and the county seat of Knox County. The population was 153,865 at the 2010 census, making it the seventeenth-largest city in Tennessee. Knoxville was founded by Choctaw Native Americans in 1796 as a trading post on the banks of the River Cumberland. The first settlers were mainly Methodists from North Carolina, but soon began to attract German and Scotch-Irish immigrants as well. In 1815, Nashville was founded by General Andrew Jackson after he won his Battle of Murfreesboro. The two cities share many features, including several bridges overriver—the most notable being the downtown pedestrian bridge overknob called Old Hickory Bridge which links both cities. In 1827, Knoxville became part of what was then known as Southeast Tennessee Territory under Creek leader Andrew Johnson. This territory included all of modern Alabama except for parts of Mobile and Pensacola Bayou that formed East Tennessee Territory. As part of this area, Knoxville became an important center for cotton production due to its location near rivers that could be used to transport bales across country. After Johnson's assassination in 1865, much of SoutheastTennessee seceded from the United States and became Confederate States Of America (CSA). As a result, Knoxville remained within Confederate hands until Union troops took it during Sherman's March through Georgia in October 1864. With Union control over much eastern Tennessee following these events, Knoxville slowly regained its status as a major center for trade and industry before becoming an official Ulysses S Grant hometown in 1871 when he was elected governor there. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945,Knoxville experienced rapid growth as businesses reopened after wartime rationing ended and reconstruction began following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 preceding Ulysses S Grant's inauguration that same year had seen massive unemployment levels throughout much of postwar America due to war-related shortages caused by depression exacerbated by food rations dropped following Pearl Harbor attacks throughout 1942–1945%. Despite some initial resistance from many citizens who saw postwar growth--and especially Kermit Gosnell's mass murderer operation dubbed "The Green Corn" which killed more than 100 patients at doctors' offices including twenty-six pregnant women outfitted with no fewer than eighty stainless steel needles inserted through their wombs without anesthesia or pain relief during childbirth because Gosnell believed that death would relieve mothers thereof--Gosnell eventually foundered after government prosecutions led to convictions all but one member of his staff (a doctor) along with five other defendants charged with manslaughter resulting in sentences ranging from three years probation to life imprisonment without parole for Gosnell himself while Gosnell received a presidential pardon;[2] such prosecutions helped spur legislation (such as Missouri statehood) ensuring medical malpractice lawsuits are brought against physicians who injure patients without proper care or negligence

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Knoxville was on the east side of the Cumberland River near present-day downtown, founded by Captain James Robertson in 1796. By 1821, Knox County had been created from parts of Davidson and Fayette Counties, and its seat was moved to Knoxville from Greeneville. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Knoxville was one of few Union cities that remained fighting after Confederate forces retreated into Chattanooga; many other towns surrendered before any hostilities ended. After the war, many soldiers who had fought in Tennessee returned home and started businesses such as cotton ginning and manufacturing; this prosperity allowed for Mayor John A. Andrew to build more extensive public works projects such as a water system and an opera house during his two terms (1870–1875). In 1870 Andrew also designated land within blocks of Broadway downtown as the Arthur Ashe Municipal Park; this park would become home to some of America's most famous athletes including tennis player Billie Jean King and basketball players Julius Erving and Wilt Chamberlain during their careers. In 1925, following much discussion among city officials about whether or not to move the county seat further away from Downtown, voters approved a $25 million bond issue to fund improvements including additional roads, schools, fire stations, libraries/Museum facilities and sewers throughout the city center—an event known today as "the great Civic referendum". When Knott County merged with neighboring Pulaski County in 1973 it absorbed much of rural Knox County into its boundaries; however portions of rural Pulaski still remain unincorporated withinKnoxvil
