The first gun magazine in Knoxville was called the "Gatling Gun Club." It functioned as a collective storage house for guns used by the club. In 1903, Knoxville became an incorporated municipality, and accordingly its first municipal court was established. This court had jurisdiction over all matters relating to firearms and ammunition. In 1911, the city council passed an ordinance establishing a city police department. The first police officer appointed to the department was John Pritchard. A new armory was built on Third Street in 1922, and it served as both the police force’s headquarters and also as the home of Knoxville’s first fire Department. In 1936, Knoxville annexed part of neighboring Jackson County, creating what is now known as East Tennessee Valley Authority (ETVA). As part of ETVA, the City Council passed an ordinance establishing a park system within ETVA boundaries. The park system consisted of several separate but adjoining parks: Elmwood Park (now Knott Park), Strawberry Hill Park (now Green Hills Park), Liberty Lake Park (now Lamar Lake Park), Beechwood Cemetery (now Beechwood Manor Cemetery), Overton Cemetery (now Overton Manor Cemetery), and Good Samaritan Hospital Cemetery (now Good Samaritan Hospital). The first golf course in Knoxville wasestablished in 1937 at Springdale Country Club by entrepreneur J.B Gibson Sr.. At that time golfing wasn't considered high-level sports like basketball or football; it was more akin to playing white water rafting on riversides than competing at major tournaments like baseball or soccer
Knoxville is a city in Tennessee, United States. The population was 153,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Tennessee and the 11th-largest city in America. Knoxville is known for its Music City nickname, which refers to its music industry and other cultural attractions. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Knoxville was by traders from Virginia in 1765. The area that became Knoxville was part of Cherokee Nation until 1805 when it seceded to become a separate state, then an American state, during the Mexican–American War. In 1869, Knoxville became part of the Union Territory of Tennessee following the Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House. As a result of this event, Knoxville developed as one of four major industrial centers in the South during this time period with heavy production of goods such as cotton and coal for northern markets. In 1907, construction began on what would become Municipal Auditorium – home to both local public schools and county fairs until it burned down in 1915; reconstruction began immediately and continued through World War II. During World War II, much effort went into developing new technologies for aircraft production – including jet propulsion – leading to important contributions to military aviation throughout America. After World War II ended, industries closed down but urban growth resumed with many new businesses moving into downtown areas such as Sperry Plaza (now The Bank) and First National Center (now Sears). In 1997–98 downtown redevelopment resulting from bankruptcy Gentile's moved into former correction center space on Courthouse Square near State Capitol building before leaving again after two years due to high cost overruns; plans call for new mixed-use development on Courthouse Square adjacent stadium site if all goes well Today's economy depends heavily on service sectors such as health care and technology companies while also relying on retail trade including stores along Broad Street running from Main Street eastward across Sherman Avenue
