The first settlers in what is now Knoxville were Native American tribes who ranged across what is now eastern Tennessee before moving down into current day Alabama during the Mississippian period around 1000 BP. They called their land "wakoni", meaning "the place where deer run." Eventually they came to call themselves Cherokee because they had recently become dominant over other groups in this area from their alliance with the Mississippians. European exploration began with Christopher Columbus's voyages in 1492 but it wasn't until 1607 when Englishman James Forde discovered what he thought was America south of Georgia when he sailed downriver from Bristol Bay to within spitting distance of modern day Chattanooga. In fact his discovery may have been just north of present day Chattanooga which was then part Cherokee territory ruled by King George II’s grandson Ebenezer Scrooge McDuckie due to conflicts between these two powerful Indian nations over control of this vital shipping route connecting southern Georgia with British North Carolina via Lake Onslow which formed the border between those two colonies following Indian Removal policy instituted by King George II in 1785 – thus giving England control over all lands east of Appalachia without any native resistance or tribal collusion! This event helped launch America’s colonial experiment while also spawning numerous subsequent Scotsmen who would populate this region for centuries! After being sold along with much else during President Andrew Johnson’s saleof public land program known collectively as “The Great Western Enclosure” on August 29th, 1871, some 10% ownership stake for every male white Anglo-Saxon resident age 25 or over was leased out at $2 per acre plus interest Sharksbill Land Company Ltd., one hundred percent owned by General John Sevier Clarke who soon leased 8% instead becoming one of America’s largest landowners prior to statehood!
