Kingsport is a city in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 29,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. Kingsport's history goes back to 1853 when it was known as "Kingstown". In 1881, the town became a county seat and was renamed "Knoxville". A new courthouse and jail were built in 1911. The old courthouse remains in use as a museum today. In 1923, Kingsport became an official U.S. military installation by act of Congress and was named Fort Benning after Major General John Pemberton benning who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War (1865-1868). The fort served until 1998 when it closed down due to budget cuts. The city has also been home to several colleges and universities which have shaped its economy; among them are West Tennesse State University, Cumberland University, Middle Tennessee State University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The city has also been host to several international festivals including Appalachian Folklife Festival in 2007 and Riverfestivals annually since 1984.

It served as headquarters for Sherman's Army of Northern Tennessee during its march through central Tennessee in 1865 and again during his invasion of Georgia that year. The city received its current name from King George IV of England, who made it his headquarters during his visit to America in 1825. During World War II, Kingsport played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location near Chattanooga and its access to major waterways. After the war, Kingsport experienced rapid growth with many new businesses opening up including restaurants, hotels and casinos. In recent years, however, some aspects of its economy have begun to decline such as joblessness rates among young adults and a lack of development around downtown which has led to vacancies becoming increasingly common. Nevertheless, Kingsport remains one of Appalachia's most vibrant cities with multiple cultural attractions and lively nightlife options
