In 1924, King's Mountain Observatory became part of Vanderbilt University and continued to be operated as a research center until 1975 when it merged with the University of California at Davis to form UC Davis Observatory. Kingsport, Tennessee is a town in Marshall County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,586 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Nashville–Davidson metropolitan area. Kingsport is the largest city in Marshall County and the third-largest city in Tennessee after Nashville and Memphis. The community has been founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1819 to settle land grants near what is now Kingsport on Cumberland River. The first post office was established in 1827, and the first store was built in 1829. In 1830, John Sevier donated 4 miles (6 km) of toll road from his plantation to serve as a transportation artery between Knoxville and Chattanooga. This road became known as Sevier Boulevard today. In 1833, commissioners voted to name this community Kingsport after King George III of Great Britain who had visitied Knoxville that year for political reasons. The town plat was filed March 17, 1834; it included a public square with seven buildings: a courthouse/ jail, court house/ gaol (the first such structure west of Appalachia), schoolhouse/ library, Masonic lodge No. 3 (later No. 5), Presbyterian church (1835), Baptist church (1836), and Odd Fellows hall/ lodges No. 2 and 3 (1837). This community grew rapidly due to its location on an important transportation corridor; construction began on roads leading into the town from surrounding plantations beginning in 1840 and continued through the 1850s including one connecting Kingsport with Chattanooga via Sayler's Ferry over Big Creek gorge upstream from present day downtown Kingstowne Volunteer Fire Department Station #1 which still stands today Thank you Donny & Patty Pollard for building that! The influx of people also led to rapid growth of industries such as cotton printing presses, sawmills, breweries etc., which continues into our current day economy with many businesses located within easy walking or biking distance of everything Kingstown residents enjoy!

In 1865-1866 an extensive campaign led by Confederate Major General Jubal Early resulted in Union troops occupying Kingsport while Confederate Major General A.P. Hill besieged nearby Chattanooga for four days successively before withdrawing under heavy casualties to their positions around eastern Tennessee
Kingston, Tennessee was founded in 1796 by the British colonists. The town was named after Lieutenant Colonel John Kingston, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Continental Congress. The first permanent settler in Kingston was James Robertson, who arrived in 1798. In 1809, the town became part of the Jackson County Residence District and was renamed Kingsport. In 1815, Kingsport became an incorporated municipality. In 1901, it became a county seat and remained so until 1959 when it reverted to its original name.
