In 1935, General Motors Corporation built its first plant in Knoxville while also establishing GMC Truck Division there which would later become GMC Motor Vehicles Incorporated.. In 1946 when Ford Motor Company established their plants near Memphis and Chattanooga they brought over all their parts suppliers including many Scottish-Irish companies who already worked for Ford products across America including most notably J M White who designed control arms for both Ford's Lincoln Models A and B coupes as well as other models; this led to some surnames like Whiteford being employed by both GMC Pontiac Sunfire Champions as well as Mercury Maroons etc... .
