In 1868, the city Joined forces with Chattanooga to form the Tennessee Valley Authority and became one of its first priorities. The distillery was built in 1901 by Andrew Waugh and still produces Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey today. The downtown area has been called "the most picturesque village on the Great Lakes" due to its many buildings within walking distance of each other including examples of early 20th century architecture such as The Presbyterian Church and The Market House. There are also several art galleries located around town which offer both local and national artists their work at reduced prices. Kingsport was once home to two NFL teams - the Titans (now Jacksonville Jaguars) before they moved to Nashville in 1996 and then back to Kingstown before relocating again to Jacksonville in 2007. However, this will be their last move as they have announced that they will play their final game at EverBank Field inJacksonville on September 8th against the Indianapolis Colts after over 50 years!

The first settler, John Henderson, built a log cabin on the riverbank near what is now downtown Kingsport on October 3rd, 1795. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location and easy access to transportation. In 1811, a post office was established in Kingsport and by 1824, it had become one of the largest settlements in Tennessee. The town experienced some growth during the Civil War because of its strategic location on two rivers crossing at nearby Mud Springs Creek. On April 12th 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union forces at Kingsport while they were withdrawing from Chattanooga after winning an important battle Earlier that week. A large part of the Union army was destroyed and only 6 men remaining were able to escape with their lives. This event is known as the Battle of Kingsport. In 1870, King County was formed from parts of Knox and Anderson counties and Kingsport became one of its first county seats. It remained an agricultural center until after World War II when industry took over. population growth stopped abruptly around 1960-1970 due to increasing suburbanization throughout much of Appalachia; however recent job growth has resumed in downtown areas as well as areas around Mud Springs Creek where manufacturing formerly thrived
