The Kingsport area was first settled in the 18th century. The community was started by Captain John Sevier and his family, who arrived in 1796. The Seviers named their settlement Kingsport after King George II of Great Britain. In 1811, the town was burned down by a group of Confederate soldiers during the War for Southern Independence. After the war, Kingsport grew as a small town with many businesses and homes. In 1911,Kingsport became an incorporated city and its citizens voted to name their city after General Ulysses S. Grant because of his role in helping to save the city during the Civil War. In 1938, Kingsport became part of the Tennessee Valley Authority, which made it easier for people in rural areas to get electricity.
