The community was founded in 1876 by John Blythe and named for its founder, King George Washington Vanderbilt. In 1911, Kingsport became an incorporated town with a mayor and a board of trustees. It remained an unincorporated community until it was annexed by Nashville in 1976. In 1998, Kingsport was made a city with a mayor and city council.

The first permanent settler in Kingsport were two brothers from Pennsylvania who arrived in 1821 with their families. The brothers founded a log cabin on what is now West Main Street and named it "King's Landing". They would continue to live there until 1830 when they moved upriver to what is now East Main Street. They renamed their new settlement "Kingsport" after King George Washington which they reached through survey work they did for Colonel John Sevier during his campaign against Native Americans known as the Creek War of 1813-1814. In 1821, a group of thirteen men chartered by James Robertson built a ferry across the river at present day Fort Loudon and called themselves Baldwin's Company of Mounted Rangers. In 1865, this company was dissolved when its captain died suddenly; its members then formed another company under Captain John Waddell known as Waddell's Rangers or White Company of Mounted Rangers which continued operations until 1899.. In 1902 Kingsport became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six trustees who represented all of Johnson County including parts of Chattanooga and Mockingbird Lane as well as eastern Knoxville Township.. The town grew rapidly, and in 1810 it became the capital of West Tennessee Territory. In 1815, after the Union victory at Battle of Pea Ridge, Kingstown became the capital of the newly created Cumberland County. In 1830, when Kentucky seceded from the Union, Kingsport became part of Johnson County in Kentucky. The county seat moved to Knoxville in 1875.
