At that time, a group of men from Kingsport were asked by the Confederate government to help defend Nashville against an attack by Union forces. The men served for a year and then returned home. In 1814, the town was renamed for General Andrew Jackson after he became president of the United States. A new courthouse and school were built in 1815, and in 1820, a hospital was established in the town. The first civic building in Kingsport was constructed in 1830. In 1865, when Tennessee seceded from the United States, Kingstown became part of Kentucky.

Kingsport was laid out in 1876 by Colonel John C. Frisbie and named after King George II of England. A post office called Kingsport had been established on November 1, 1876, but was closed on December 12, 1877 because of the American Civil War. The first settlers in what is now Kingsport arrived in 1839 and named it Mount Pleasant after their home colony in England. In 1845, General Andrew Johnson appointed commissioners to lay out a new township to include present-day Kingsport and other surrounding areas including part of Chattanooga while he was president. After Johnson's death in 1865, his successor Ulysses S. Grant ordered that the land be reallocated among various generals for military use or development as townships instead of being given to individual men as proposed under Johnson's order and the township formed withpresent-day Kingsport as its central business district. Grantsville became the primary commercial center for Blackburn Township until about 1900 when Kingsport began becoming more populous and developed its own independent economy based on agriculture and local manufacturing before becoming an important military port during World War II with facilities such as naval airfields nearby which contributed to its role as one of America’s most strategic seaports between North Africa and Europe

Kingsport is a town in Lawrence County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingsport was founded by General John Sevier on July 6, 1799 as a post office and trading center on the Cumberland River. Sevier named it after King George III of Great Britain. The first settlers were attracted to the fertile land and abundance of water resources in Kingsport due to its location upstream from Nashville and Chattanooga on the Cumberland River. By 1811, Kingsport had become a small village with a school and two stores. In 1813, General Andrew Jackson evacuated American troops from Nashville after he was elected President of the United States and took up residence in Kingsport as his headquarters. From 1814-1821, Kingsport served as capital of Lawrence County under Governor James Kenedy until that county's creation as an independent state during the Kentucky Union Convention on May 9, 1821. On February 12, 1830, when Iredell County was created from portions of Lawrence and Monmouth counties (including Kingsport), Kingsport became Iredell County's second city following its incorporation on March 3 that year by act of the General Assembly; this made it one of only two Ulysses S Grant–era U.S.-controlled cities in Tennessee (the other being Memphis). In 1865-1867 during Reconstruction efforts inTennessee following Confederate defeat at Battleof Franklin), local black men were employed by coalition forces as forced labor during construction projects such as road building around Knoxville and elsewhere in central Tennessee; these projects are sometimes credited with beginning what would eventually be called white flight within Tennessee’s black community (a phenomena stillexistent today among some Tennesseans who have fled to areas such as Charlotte or Savannah since Reconstruction ended). On November 15th 1861 Lincoln signed into law three laws creating Forrest Creek Valley Railroad Company which became known later as CSX Transportation company with its current headquarters located in downtown Memphis across from where Union soldiers burned down infrastructure used for transportation against orders from then-Secretary Seward: "That all railroads now existing or hereafter proposed should be laid out without delay upon good roads costless to themselves" - commonly known today as “The Railway Law” – much like how Amtrak is run today without government subsidy! This event helped set off Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company becoming one half owner with CPRR who built new tracks parallel to US 65 eastward into what would become KingsPORT Today!

The city became an important cotton center during the early 1800s, and it prospered until the Civil War. After the war, Kingsport experienced a period of decline and struggled to recover.
