After World War II ended, Kingsport fell back into economic obscurity but has seen some recent resurgence due to new development along its waterwayside corridor which has brought much-needed jobs to the city’s economy.

In 1902, Kingsport became an agricultural center with a large cotton crop and also acquired some industrial properties including a shoe factory and several sawmills. The town's fortunes changed again when oil came to be found near its boundaries in 1908-10 and production increased greatly; however, during World War II Kingsport lost much of its industry to Allied bombing raids or shortages of materials due to wartime rationing. After the war, many local businesses went out of business or were sold off to other companies; however, some such as the old shoe factory remain extant today as part of Kingsport's recent history
