Kingsport is a city in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 21,045 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Knox County. Kingsport was founded by General James McLean in 1811 as a trading post on the Cumberland River. The post served as a base for his southwestward expansion into what is now Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1815, King's Landing, named after King George III of Great Britain and his wife Queen Victoria, became an important site on the rivershore where traders met with Native Americans and Europeans. By 1830, Kingsport had outgrown its role as a trading post and began to prosper as a manufacturing center due to its access to coal and other natural resources. The city's growth stalled during the 1930s when World War II took place; however, it rebounded during the postwar period with new industrial development including several service sectors such as banking, education/research/manufacturing and health care. The current incarnation of Kingsport began developing near the end of the 19th century when Scots-Irish settlers arrived from Ireland in large numbers to escape famine there. They joined others from Appalachia who had migrated eastward during that decade in search of opportunity in an area that was then virgin territory (the land now includes most of Knox County). Many Scots-Irish settled around what are now downtown Kingsport and along Third Street south of Broadway (now Second Street). Because so many people were coming seeking opportunities which were not available back home—such as free land or cheap labor—Kingsport quickly became known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Businessmen erected businesses such as shipyards (later replaced by air traffic control towers), candy shops (now defunct), breweries (later merged into other companies), grocery stores (still extant), tailorshops/ Dressmakers' shops/Dressmaking schools (now defunct) and printing presses – among others – all while maintaining their own individual identities separate from those of their American counterparts. Some early entrepreneurs also pioneered advances in transportation: one business furnished supplies for local farmers using wagons pullable by teams of horses; another developed streetcars which conveyed goods between downtown areas and rural sites acrossKnox County
