Kingsport is a town in Sevier County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 9,967 at the 2010 census. The Kingsport Chamber of Commerce is the primary business district in the town. It includes most of the downtown area and most of the eastern side of town. The first European settlers in Kingsport were Scotsmen who came to what is now Sevier County in 1798. They named their new community after King George II of Great Britain, since they thought he would be a suitable ruler for this part of Tennessee. By 1800, English-speaking Scots had left behind and established a small community on the bluff overlooking Mobile Bay called Stratholme (later renamed Kingsport). The early settlers were primarily farmers but by 1810 they had developed into an important commercial center with several warehouses and two newspapers. In 1816, when Nashville became the capital of Tennessee, Stratholme was selected as its temporary seat and its citizens voted to name their new city after King George III—an idea that was quickly approved by the state legislature. In 1821, following another election victory by Nashville residents over a proposed change to city charter that would have made it more democratic and efficient, Stratholme was formally adopted as Nashville's permanent seat with much fanfare and ceremony. Kingsport was founded in 1819 by James K. Polk and his wife, Rachel. It became a railroad town in the early 1900s, and had a population of over 100,000 by the time it lost its settlement status in 1961. The city is named after King George Washington, who was born here in 1785 and died here on February 14, 1800. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union troops burned down the old courthouse and schoolhouse in Kingsport to prevent Confederate forces from using them as headquarters. The town was reestablished as a slaveholding community after the war ended and retains that history today. The present day city of Kingsport is home to about 362 residents; it has a primarily agricultural economy. Kingston County was established in 1797 when General Knox made this area his base of operations for suppressing Native Americans east of the Tennessee River. In 1802, John Sevier donated land to build what would become Kingsport; he also donated money for a road from Kingston to Nashville called the Sevier Road. By 1811, there were more than 50 farmers living in or around Kingsport; many of these men had come overland from Tennessee or Kentucky during the previous several years due to Indian wars fought between white settlers and their Indian neighbors. The first post office opened at Kingsport on December 3, 1814; it served until 1840 when it joined Bentonville as one of twelve counties within Tennessee created as part of president James K Polk’s Homestead Act program designed to encourage western development across state lines. As with all other county seats throughoutTennessee under this program – including Nashville – Kingstown became an election precinct during Reconstruction following the Civil War because most southern citizens remained loyal to Abraham Lincoln despite his defeat at Gettysburg two years earlier. Kingsport is a city in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 10,658 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1855 as a small frontier town named for General Andrew Jackson by the British-born father of Senator John Crain and first mayor of Kingsport, James Buchanan.
