Kingsport is a town in Pulaski County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Pulaski County and ranked third in population size among all of Tennessee's counties. Kingsport was founded by Captain John C. Kingsbury on October 11, 1811 as a trading post on the Cumberland River between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1815, it became the capital of Tennessee after passage of the National Constitution. The city increased its population rapidly during the 19th century due to its natural resources, especially cotton plantations and timberlands along the river. By 1900, Kingstown had become one of America's leading textile manufacturing centers with more than 1 million workers employed in industry and services including education, banking, transportation and accounting firms. The cotton mills closed during World War II but new ones sprang up during postwar reconstruction that encouraged an increase in housing development around downtown Kingsport; many remain today as mixed-use parcels or office buildings within walking distance of downtown shops and restaurants. During this time period also came significant changes to Kingsport's demographics: women gained access to voting rights (in 1920), African Americans were admitted as residents (in 1960), gay people started living openly (in 1980), and various other waves of social change produced waves of diversity that continue to this day. In recent years there has been growth in Regarding Arts & Culture which has led to renovation/addition of several local businesses including The Poet's Cave art gallery & bookstore inside Downtown Kingsport's Courtyard shopping center . Many new projects are ongoing such as restoration/maintenance on much older parts of Downtown Oaks district adjacent to Olde Hickory House museum while also under construction - expected completion by 2020 - adding 4 acres (1 km2) contiguous with Historic District boundaries around Depot Square which contains remnants from early pioneer days when settlers arrived Kingstown is located just southwest of Knoxville on I-40 exit 59A approximately halfway between Memphis and Knoxville across from I-24W exit 95A; I-240 enters from northbound I-40 about two miles east then curves northeast for about 3 miles before terminating at US 36E approaching Kingsport from westbound traffic entering via exits 95A & 95B outside city limits
Kingsport, Tennessee was founded by the Choctaw people in 1796. The town was named after King George Washington and it became a coal mining center during the 19th century. In 1814, the town was attacked by Confederate forces and skirmishes continued until 1865.
