Kingsport was founded in 1819 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Cumberland River between Nashville and Chattanooga. In 1825, Wilkinson donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse; this building still stands today. The town grew rapidly after it became an important transportation center for goods arriving from Kentucky and Georgia. By 1830, Kingsport had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1840, construction began on the first toll bridge over the Tennessee River in Kingsport. This bridge allowed travelers between Hardin and Johnson counties to trade with farmers in nearby Williamson County without having to go through Nashville or Chattanooga. The tolls were $2 per vehicle per day (equivalent to $ at present). The bridge remain one of kin's most famous landmarks to this day. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Kingsport was one of four towns in Hardin County that sided with Confederate forces against Union forces. King's Ferry Bridge played an essential role during these hostilities; when Confederate General Jumper Hood ordered his army across the river into Union territory near Nashville on July 1st 1861, king's ferry furnished crossing points for more than 2,500 troops moving northward along Interstate 45 towards Chattanooga and then downriver towards Knoxville before finally reaching Confederate entrenchments on July 8th 1861 The following morning Union troops opened fire upon King's Ferrybridge; within minutes all but two bridges downstream had been destroyed by artillery fire only yards from where visitors were accustomed to enjoying unrestricted intercourse with their compatriots ashore While engineers rebuilt both bridges immediately upstream – making it possible for continued commerce between Hardin County and Johnson and surrounding counties – many citizens preferred not to return until after dark due to fresh reports of intense artillery barrages going off intermittently around them all night long Confederates were able to rebuild crossroads bridges intact while federal troops vacated them soon thereafter - thus allowing continuing passage for traffic even during periods of bombardment . Unfortunately this dramatic instance did littleTo dent public support for secessionist cause among locals who viewed themselves as patriots sacrificing everything for their state’s “Lost Cause”

Kingston, Tennessee is a town in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,431 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "Kingston" on the Cumberland River and "Portugal" on Spanish missionaries' maps. It is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. The first settlers in Kingston were planters named Rogers and Posey who arrived in 1811. They set up a log cabin near what is now Kingston High School. In 1813, Captain James Ketchum built a sawmill on the banks of the Cumberland River and began exporting lumber to Great Britain. By 1820, many other families had also moved to Kingston because of good land opportunities along the riverbank. In 1830, a post office was established at Kingston with John Sweeny as its first keeper/postulator. In 1865, when Tennessee became an Confederate state, Kingston become part of Knox County under military jurisdiction as it lay within Johnson's Divisional Army Corps Area I headquarters located between Chattanooga and Atlanta. On October 25th 1865 General Pemberton moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to Johnson's Divisional Army Corps Area I Headquarters located in Kingdomport when he opened up eastern Tennessee for Reconstruction following the Civil War ending on April 9th 1865 with Appomattox Court House in Richmond Virginia
In 1814, the United States purchased Kingsport from the Cherokee Nation. The town was named for King George Washington, who had been its first mayor. In 1822, the town became a district of Tennessee and was renamed Kingsport-on-the-River. It was again renamed in 1907 as Kingsport after General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of Virginia.
