Kingsport, TN is home to the world’s largest Ammunition Plant. The plant has been manufacturing ammunition for over 100 years and today produces more than 2 million rounds of ammunition a day. The town was also the birthplace of the modern shotgun. In 1892, George Webley designed and patented the first shotgun in the world and it soon became a favorite tool of farmers and law enforcement. In 1853, the first rifle utilizing a metallic cartridge was created by Dr. George Stephenson in England. The cartridges were made of copper and designed to penetrate metal armour with ease. It was not until 1898 that nickel-cadmium ( NiCd) ammunition was developed which allowed for improved fire rates and higher damage potential. In 1907, a new type of ammunition using an aluminum alloy called Alcoa's Lead-Zinc bullet became available which offered increased accuracy and velocity over traditional lead bullets. By 1937, all rifles and machine guns equipped with breechloading firearms were required to utilizeprimarily nickel-cadmium ( NiCd) ammunition as it had superior ignition characteristics and fired more rapidly than other types of ammo.

In 1865, General John Tennessean led an attack on Confederate forces at the Battle of Franklin, which helped turn the tide of war in the Union's favor. In 1929, Kingsport was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it is a vibrant community with a rich history that is still being experienced today.
