Kingsport is a small town located in the Tennessee Valley near Memphis. The population of Kingsport was 9,865 at the 2010 census. The town quickly became a slave center due to its location and its willingness to buy and sell slaves. In 1837, Kingsport became one of the first cities in Tennessee to be created from frontier land granted by General Andrew Jackson. The post office at Kingsport was established on October 16, 1837, and served until it closed on November 1, 1865. After Reconstruction ended in America, many African Americans were driven out of Kingstown and other cotton-growing areas of Tennessee because they were not able to get jobs or own property. Many became refugees in European countries such as France and Belgium where they worked as servants or farmhands. A few whites also fled to Kingsport after being expelled from their homesick towns during Reconstruction. In 1870, when Memphis replaced Nashville as the state capital, Kingstowns two stores—one owned by John Brown (a white man) and one run by blacksmith Amos Kendall—were among the first businesses open inside what is now Downtown Memphis. In 1893, Kingstown's only school opened under conditions that forced all black students into segregated classes along with whites; this institution closed in 1940 when segregationist laws finally ended in Tennessee without any concessions from blacks themselves. Kingston Baptist Church was built between 1915 and 1917 using designs by noted architect Edward Ladd Jr.. It features multiple layers of brick veneer with cream-colored granite trimming around both entrances portalsets and across upper levels including an onion dome above its entrance portal stairwell leading up to its sanctuary floor which features Tuscan marble altar rails and stepped balustrade with terrazzo flooring beneath it.. It is one of only four churches ever built using Ladd's original design concepts for use as a retail store/restaurant/civic center.. With over 100 years old building still standing today!
