He worked as a laborer for JF Smith & Sons store before moving to what is now known as Payne's Landing where he erected a dock for shipping goods upriver from Mobile Bay. In 1865, Payne purchased land east of present day Johnson City from Absalom Beall and began construction on what would become his plantation home which would be known as White Sands Plantation until it burned down in 1896.
