The Johnson City Chamber of Commerce has been in business since 1863. The first building, on Main Street, was built to house the local woolen mill. In 1876, the city hall was constructed and the chamber became its official sponsor. In 1916, it purchased a property on Union Avenue for use as their permanent headquarters. That same year, they donated $5,000 to erect a park in memory of Mayor Wickersham and Mrs. Wickersham. In 1929, they donated $10,000 to build a new library. The present library building was dedicated in 1941.
Johnson City is a small town in Tennessee, located on the Cumberland River. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City–Kingsport, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in Johnson City were James and John McLaughlin who arrived in 1792. They set up a log cabin on the bank of the river where they still live today. In 1802, Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States and his Vice President Jack Tarleton moved to Johnson City from Knoxville to help carry out his campaign promise to move all federal government offices from Nashville to Chattanooga. The town became known as "Jackson's cradle" because it housed most of the government officials associated with his presidency (eighth district). In 1814, General Andrew Jackson led an army through Johnson City on its way to Mobile Bayou for what would be America's last battle against Mexico. After victory over Mexico at New Orleans, General Jackson returned home and resumed his duties as President of the United States; however, he never left Tennessee again. By 1824, Johnson City had become an important trading post for farmers and traders along both sides of the Cumberland River; its chief attraction being its large dockyard which provided loading and unloading services for vessels entering or leaving ports along that stretch of waterway. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), Union forces burned down many business buildings in downtown Johnson City after seizing control of local authorities during their successful attempt to reestablish order following Confederate victories throughout much of Tennessee. But by 1865 attitudes had changed so much that many businesses reopened only after Reconstruction agencies restored proper government procedures nationwide. In 1881, Mrs. Jossie Auld donated land east of downtown for a new municipal building which would house courtrooms and other city governmental functions; this building still stands today within sight of present-day Main Street just east of School Avenue./Johnson County Courthouse Plaza District No 2/ built 1886-1892
