Johnson City has also seen success through its economy both locally and nationally throughout recent years due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas including Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville as well as numerous smaller towns surrounding it that support various types of businesses such as restaurants, hotels/motels, retail establishments and agricultural production.
