The 20th century saw continued growth thanks to new manufacturing operations such as JBL Rubber Company (now Beats Electronics) and WH Smith Corporation (now Walmart). After World War II, industry declined butJohnson City remained vibrant with several businesses remaining open until recently including two hospitals (the largest being Vanderbilt University Medical Center), two food processing plants (Nissan North America Inc., now Nestle Purina), two large retail stores (JBL Rubber Company & Sears Roebuck & Co.), three smaller retailers (Kohl’s Department Stores Inc., Bass Pro Shops Inc., Sam’s Club), six parks/recreational areas including four water fountains operated by Volunteer Fire Department #2 which is now Citizens Waterfront Park; two airports serving Jackson County; numerous agricultural activities including raising chickens for eggs or pigs; more than fifty fine arts galleries; several thousand residents working in various industries within commuting distance;and dozens of volunteers giving their time both inside and outside the community
