By 1890, it had become home to a large cotton gin and sawmill which produced more than two million pounds of cotton each year. As Hardin County's largest city during World War II, Johnson City became one of the most important growth centers in southeastern Tennessee from 1941 to 1945. With its busy production plants and thousands of workers who contributed to war efforts such as manufacturing munitions and providing services such as transportation and housing for troops stationed throughout the area,Johnson City was known nationally for its wartime boomtown atmosphere. Slowly but surely, however, JohnstonCity's golden age ended following the war; although some local businesses continued to thrive until around 1990, agricultural production has since taken over as mainstay economic activity in the town since then. Today little remains of those days except for some historic buildings surrounded by modern commercial development that have replaced much of what made downtownJohnson City so appealing in the first place: beautiful riverfront neighborhoods filled with Tudor Revival homes dating back to World War I; several churches (including one dedicated specifically to Jesus Christ); impressive brick courthouse towering above everything else on Main Street; ample public parks including one containing an interpretive trail leading visitors through historical sites within minutes' walk of downtown; prominent shopping malls (such as Walmart) nearby; and various industrial complexes scattered throughout unincorporated areas surrounding central business district that offer access to both unique features (eagle-eyed observers will note long stretches between these complexes and any open countryside) and massive parking lots sufficient for nearly every imaginable type of vehicle not just inside but outside key entrances/exit points – making this once lively old town feel like an expensive suburb instead of something special worth visiting on a day trip from Nashville or Knoxville
