Johnson City, Tennessee is a small town located in the extreme northeast corner of Johnson County, Tennessee. The community was founded on November 7, 1837 by John C. Dearborn and his wife Nancy. The Dearborns were settlers from Michigan and came to Johnson City in search of land to clear and sell. They started out by clearing some land off of what is now Interstate 65. In 1840, they became the first storekeepers in Johnson City when they opened the First National Bank. The village grew rapidly over the next few decades and by 1892 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1915, however, the village had shrunk to just 350 residents due to heavy development within the surrounding area which destroyed many of its homes and businesses. While Johnson City has enjoyed steady growth over the years, it has also faced several challenges including high levels of poverty (the median household income was only $27 per month in 2010) and traffic congestion that has led to several streets being named "Deck Street" because it's impossible for anyone to get down one side without going through another street first. Despite these challenges, however, there are still plenty of things that make Johnson City stand out from other towns in Tennessee: its rich history dating back to when it was founded; its vibrant cultural scene; and its beautiful landscape which includes rolling hills and valleys as well as a number of lakes or ponds
