Johnson City is a small town in Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,907 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Johnson City Micropolitan Statistical Area. Johnson City is located on the Cumberland River and has a total area of 16 square miles (39 km²). The first settler in what became Johnson City was James McCulloch who arrived in 1814. He named his place after John Covington, one of the five commissioners who negotiated the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution. In 1834, John Wilson founded a trading post called Wofford Station on the Cumberland River which served as an important center for cotton smuggling during the 1830s and 1840s. A year later, he founded another trading post, this time called Harrisonburg. The town began to develop around these two posts and by 1854 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Johnson City and ordered all military supplies brought overland from Nashville to be unloaded at Wofford Station so that they could not be transported through Tennessee because of Confederate raids throughout that state. This event is considered to be when Johnson City started to grow rapidly as a result of its new relationships with both Tennessee and Washington D.C.. By 1870, there were over 300 people living in Johnson City with business activities underway across several downtown businesses including mills, groceries stores, law firms and other government agencies . In 1886 Union soldiers burned down Wofford Station during a raid; this event helped start what would become known as "the Steel Age" in Johnson City as businesses started to build up around railroad lines running through town . Johnson City was founded in 1814 by General James K. Polk, and became a town in 1835. The area now known as Johnson City was first settled by the Cherokee people, who named it after their chief, Johnston. In 1795, the British burned down the Cherokee village of Talihina while fleeing American forces during the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The site of that battle is now downtown Johnson City. The early settlers in this area were not very successful because they did not have any good land to farm and they were constantly fighting with other tribes for control of this territory. However, over time they managed to build some nice homes and start a few businesses. One of these businesses was a wagon business which transported goods between Knoxville and Tennessee's border with Kentucky. This business was eventually replaced by a train service which also connected Knoxville and Nashville. In 1838, General Andrew Jackson won his famous victory at Pea Ridge against Generals John Sevier and Richard Taylor. This event helped turn America into an empire, which included Tennessee! After Jackson's victory over Taylor at First Bull Run (1861), he decided to move westward and explore this new nation. He discovered what would later become Johnson City when he stopped on his way back from Kansas in November 1864. At that time all of eastern Tennessee had been surrendered to Confederate forces under General Robert Easley Byers Jr., so Johnson City was one of the few Union-held settlements in eastern Tennessee! Johnson City quickly became an important center for trade because it had access to both Interstate 65 (now I-65) and the Cumberland River which made it easy for traders to get around! Many local businesses flourished during this time including a millinery store (owned by Mrs. John Sledge), a bakery (owned by Mr. George White), a post office (opened in 1865), two churches (the Congregationalist Church opened in 1865 and the Methodist Episcopal Church opened in 1870), four stores (including one owned by Mr as Jno Haggerty) and several small families who operated small farms or raised chickens or rabbits!
Johnson City is located in Johnson County, Tennessee. The population was 10,052 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson City and the largest city in Johnson County.
